How to Support Your Immune System Naturally: A Chiropractor's Guide

chiropractor adjusting female patientI had a practice member on the table last night and asked her how she’d been digesting. She’d just come through a stressful stretch at work, and I could feel it in her sacrum, locked up in a way that isn’t her baseline. I’ve seen her for years. She told me she hadn’t been giving herself even a few minutes to let things move through her, in every sense of that.

That’s usually where we start when we talk about immune health, listening to what the body’s already telling you before reaching for anything else.

Maybe you’re here because you have kids and you want them to grow up resilient. Maybe you’re here because your immune system feels like it’s working against you, and somewhere along the way you picked up a label like autoimmune to explain it. Either way, here’s how we think about it at Cook Chiropractic, and why your nervous system sits at the center of it.

What are your symptoms trying to tell you?

We believe your body is intelligent. Every symptom means something. A runny nose is your body clearing something out. Throwing up after a bad meal is your body protecting you.

Most of us were never taught to think this way. We were taught to cover symptoms up, take something for it, and power through.

Part of what we do here is help you relearn how to listen to your own body again, starting with your kids if you have them. In our house, we don’t talk about being sick. We talk about what the body is doing and why.

How do sleep and water play a part in a regulated nervous system?

We see hundreds of practice members every week, and two things come up over and over: sleep and water.

The deepest stages of sleep are when your body regenerates and turns over weakened cells for new ones. Cut sleep short long enough, and your body will find a bigger way to get your attention.

Water moves things through your body and out. Without enough of it, things sit and get sluggish. Simple, and one of the easiest things to let slide.

You can’t skip these two and expect the rest of it to work.

Is rest more than sleep?

I had a practice member recently who’s dealing with more pain throughout her body than usual and has been coming in more often. She’s someone who goes, goes, goes. Walks every day, takes the dogs out, doesn’t sit still. When I asked about her baseline, she just said, “I’m so tired.”

I asked if she’d let herself be tired this season, instead of comparing herself to where she was five or ten years ago. I see this a lot, especially in women who’ve been through a lot of change and are still running like rest is the enemy.

Most of us think of rest as sleep and only sleep. But your mind needs rest, too, and most of us have never practiced sitting still with an empty head for even two minutes. If meditation feels impossible, start smaller. A short guided body scan gives your mind something to follow. Trauma release work, singing bowls, or just blocking fifteen minutes on your calendar with nothing scheduled can do the same job.

Sometimes you need someone to hold that space for you until resting becomes its own habit.

Does saying it out loud change anything?

It does. Verbal, out loud affirmations have a real effect on your mind and your mood. Reading something in your head is efficient. Your brain skips right over it. Saying it out loud forces your body to process it.

Try this. Look in the mirror, name what you’re struggling with, then say the opposite out loud. Ten times, every morning, for a month. If rest feels impossible to prioritize, try: the best use of my time is taking care of myself. It’ll feel untrue at first. Say it anyway.

Should you give your child medicine if they have a fever?

A fever is your body raising its temperature to fight off a virus or bacteria. Your body is using it on purpose.

When we reach for medication at the first sign of a fever, we might bring the number down, but we’ve interrupted a process the body was designed to run. Kids who are allowed to work through a mild fever, while still eating, drinking, and resting, often bounce back faster and build a stronger response for next time.

This means watching closely, trusting what you see, and knowing when a fever needs extra support versus when it needs a call to your pediatrician. Delayed gratification, in a fever or anywhere else, tends to build a stronger system than the quick fix does.

How does chiropractic care support your immune system?

Your brain runs everything in your body, and it does that through your spinal cord and nerves. When a subluxation gets in the way, communication between your brain and body slows down or gets scrambled. Your adjustment clears that interference so your Innate Intelligence can do its job.

A clear nervous system means your body reads its environment accurately and responds the way it’s built to, instead of staying stuck in fight or flight. We have practice members with psoriasis who’ve watched their plaques improve under care, people who’d tried everything under the sun before finding us. The adjustment supports the nervous system, and a more efficient nervous system supports digestion and detox. The skin often carries less of that extra load as a result.

Sleep, water, and rest are pieces of the puzzle, and plenty of people can coach you on those. Nobody else is going to teach you how your nervous system runs the whole show. That’s our job.

Where can you start this week?

  • Protect one thing this week: your bedtime or your water intake. Pick one and hold it.
  • Try two minutes of stillness a day. A body scan works if silence feels hard.
  • Say one affirmation out loud in the mirror each morning. Not ten. Just one, consistently.
  • Notice the small warning sign before it becomes the big one. Fatigue, indigestion, a short fuse. Ask what your body might be telling you before you power through it.

The Bigger Picture

That practice member I mentioned, the one whose sacrum told me more than she did? She’s doing better these days. She started listening to what her own body had been saying for a while.

That’s our role here. Every adjustment, every visit, every talk like this one comes back to the same thing: your body is intelligent, and healing happens from the inside out.
