Last week at the Voyagers program, we went outside to go for a walk. After a long day of middle school, I assumed the kids would want some fresh air. Well, my thoughts on this were right. The second we stepped outside, the kids took off running. It started with some simple skipping on the sidewalk which then turned into a little game of ‘Tag, You’re It’.
This is so important for everyone, but ESPECIALLY these kids!
Movement is one of the characteristics of LIFE. We need to move in order to learn new behaviors, process our environment, and adapt to chaos. The ability to move is not only a gift, but also an essential part of our anatomy and physiology. As we move, our blood (which carries oxygen) starts flowing faster. The blood flow to the brain is increased and ultimately delivers more oxygen to the brain. With more oxygen, we are able to think and process faster. Keeping the blood flowing and the brain firing is essential for growing, adapting, and learning new things. We must move in order to facilitate this process.
A few tips to help kids MOVE more:
Limit screen time per day? Per week?
Take daily walks as a family.
Encourage commitment to a physical activity or after school activity.
Positive reinforcement when a child is outside moving.
Have fun and play together!
The best part… ALL types of movements help so there is no excuse. Find something that you and your child like and stick with it. Running, walking, swimming, yoga, sports, hide and seek, leap frog, and the list goes on and on! Even going to the chiropractor is adding movement in your spine!!
Yes, that’s right… Chiropractic care is using the spine to create movement within your system! This allows for better blood and nerve flow to the brain. Just another reason why we think chiropractic is so important for you and your family! There are endless options out there, you just have to find what works for you and your family.
Movement is a key factor in keeping our brain happy!
So now that you’re done reading this, I challenge you to go MOVE.
