What's Your Personality?!

A little behind the scenes here at
Cook Chiropractic…

Today, we spent the morning training as a team on the DISC assessment with Paul McDonald.  You may be wondering what in the world is the DISC assessment and why would we spend the morning working on that?!

First the WHAT:

The DISC assessment is a simple personality classification used to help better understand people.  D represents Dominance.  These are the people that thrive off progress.  I represents Influence.  These are the people that are inspiring and are people oriented.  S represents Steadiness.  These are the people that have an appreciation for support and systems.  C represents Conscientious.  These are the people that want to be correct and clear with their choices.

So now on to the WHY:

Understanding the DISC personalities can help you better understand yourself and others.

Better understanding yourself can help lead to recognizing your strengths and your weaknesses.  Then you can take your strength and magnify it, using it as your asset.  Then you can look into your weaknesses and find help within those areas.  It’s all a process of learning to put your best foot forward in the areas where excelling is easier for you and finding help in areas that challenge you.

Recognizing these traits in others helps you to better understand the other persons desires and communicate your needs in an effective manner.  If we can understand where the person is coming from, then we are better equipped to meet the needs of all involved.

These can be used in every aspect of YOUR life, from your relationship with yourself, to your relationship at home, to even your work environment.  Communication can be enhanced when you understand personality types better.

Better Communication = Better Environments = Less Stress = Ease on the System = Healthy WELL-BEING

Sounds like a win-win-win!

Chiropractic FIRST Day!

We are a society of immediate gratification.  We want the results yesterday.  So it only makes sense that in today’s world the ‘quick fix’ to pain appears to prescription drugs, specifically opioids.  When it comes to back pains and headaches, the pain can be debilitating, and people would do anything to get rid of it.  But what if the quick fix isn’t your best option?  Are you being told to look for other solutions or are you simply taking the pills?  What effect does this pill have on your body?

We are a part of a movement called Chiropractic First.  The movement is designed to raise awareness on the serious effects of opioids and bring to motion alternative solutions.  Before we dive into why Chiropractic First is a solution to this issue, let’s dive into the facts on opioids!

Opioids are used to mask the pain.  They help to cover what is happening at that moment, but they don’t solve the problem or fix the source of WHY the pain is happening in the first place.  The reduction of pain and the high becomes so powerful and inevitably becomes addicting.  Four out of every five heroin addicts say that their addiction began with a prescribed drug.  Prescription opioids have quadrupled from 1999 to 2010.  From this prescription rise, we have seen a major increase in overdoses.  In 2016, over 65,000 Americans died.  That is more than auto accidents, gun violence, and even Vietnam War veterans over a 14-year span.  This is a serious issue that is affecting families all over America.  The United States makes up 5% of the Worlds populations; however, we are consuming 80% of the World’s opioid prescriptions.

Opioids don’t address the WHY. Pain is a symptom that presents as a warning sign.  It’s a time to pay attention to your body and change whatever is causing the pain.  We want to encourage you to take your power back.  Recognize pain as a warning sign and get involved in your health.  We want you to explore your options and educate yourself on what is out there.  Pain can drastically change your life if you let it.  Let’s change the way we look at pain by making healthier choices, changing diet and nutrition, physical exercise, social and emotional stress, and of course chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care works with your nervous system to connect your brain to the rest of your body. With a greater connection, your body can adapt and perceive pain differently. As we calm your nervous system, people will see pain patterns from all over their body shift. People who see a chiropractor first for pain, are 55% less likely to use medications and patterns show have fewer visits to the primary health physicians.

Let’s take the first step together with chiropractic care!

Track and Field Day

Dr. Amanda saw a lot of kids the day after their intense 5th grade Track and Field Day! As the kiddos were pushing their limits with running, throwing, and even jumping… their bodies were ready for an adjustment! A few reasons why every kid should get a chiropractic adjustment after physical activities like Track and Field Day…

  1. Chiropractic care helps relax muscles. As we connect the pathways between their brain and the rest of their body, the nerves are able to fire properly to the muscles. This allows for muscles to return to normal state faster and away from muscle fatigue or spasm.

  2. Bumps and bruises are inevitable after a day such as track and field day! As kids fall down, they alter their own body mechanics. As chiropractors, we call these misalignments subluxations. We correct these subluxations to help make sure the body is working at optimal function!

  3. Simply put… the kids LOVE getting adjusted! Dr. Amanda had so many kids READY for their adjustment. One kid couldn’t sleep the night before because he was excited to get checked.

Moral of the story… Don’t forget to get your kids checked!!

Bedwetting & Chiropractic Care

Bedwetting beyond “normal” age can be difficult for families. Unbearable amounts of stress on the parents who work tirelessly at changing the sheets, keeping up with smells, and not to mention the inability to sleep through the entire night. On top of parental stress, you add the devastating stress on the kids that are left with feelings of shame, embarrassment, and anxiety. The social patterns are disrupted and stress can pile on the entire family.

We’ve heard it all… and we are excited that we’ve also gotten to be a part of the solution for so many families. It truly is a beautiful thing to hear parents tell us that their kid is no longer wetting the bed!

We don’t “fix” bedwetting. As chiropractors, we simply work with the child’s brain and nervous system. The chiropractic adjustment to the spine increases the communication between the brain and the rest of the body. As a result to improving this communication, we see a wide-array of symptoms disappear. In the case of bedwetting, the body is able to go into a rest and digest state. Within this state, the brain is able to communicate with the bladder and improve control.

We cannot control what happens after the chiropractic adjustment, but we can share our success stories! We have had many families report that chiropractic care has helped their children with bedwetting; which improves the stress in the household, improves sleep patterns, and creates a healthier environment.

Do you know anyone that is having challenges with bedwetting? Share this article with them.. maybe chiropractic could be their solution!!

𝕄 ● 𝕆 ● 𝕍 ● 𝔼 ● 𝕄 ● 𝔼 ● ℕ ● 𝕋

Last week at the Voyagers program, we went outside to go for a walk. After a long day of middle school, I assumed the kids would want some fresh air. Well, my thoughts on this were right. The second we stepped outside, the kids took off running. It started with some simple skipping on the sidewalk which then turned into a little game of ‘Tag, You’re It’.

This is so important for everyone, but ESPECIALLY these kids!

Movement is one of the characteristics of LIFE. We need to move in order to learn new behaviors, process our environment, and adapt to chaos. The ability to move is not only a gift, but also an essential part of our anatomy and physiology. As we move, our blood (which carries oxygen) starts flowing faster. The blood flow to the brain is increased and ultimately delivers more oxygen to the brain. With more oxygen, we are able to think and process faster. Keeping the blood flowing and the brain firing is essential for growing, adapting, and learning new things. We must move in order to facilitate this process.

A few tips to help kids MOVE more:

  1. Limit screen time per day? Per week?

  2. Take daily walks as a family.

  3. Encourage commitment to a physical activity or after school activity.

  4. Positive reinforcement when a child is outside moving.

  5. Have fun and play together!

The best part… ALL types of movements help so there is no excuse. Find something that you and your child like and stick with it. Running, walking, swimming, yoga, sports, hide and seek, leap frog, and the list goes on and on! Even going to the chiropractor is adding movement in your spine!!

Yes, that’s right… Chiropractic care is using the spine to create movement within your system! This allows for better blood and nerve flow to the brain. Just another reason why we think chiropractic is so important for you and your family! There are endless options out there, you just have to find what works for you and your family.

Movement is a key factor in keeping our brain happy!

So now that you’re done reading this, I challenge you to go MOVE.

Chiropractic Care for Kiddos!

It’s normal to be sitting in Cook Chiropractic’s waiting room and see children laughing, running around, and playing in our kids corner. At first glance, one may just assume that the parents are getting adjusted and the kids are simply hanging out. Only to then recognize the kid’s zebra table and see the little ones jumping up on the table. It’s then you would realize that these kiddos are getting adjusted too! So what’s the deal with that…

Chiropractic care is for everyone, including the kiddos! Chiropractic care works with the spine in order to free the nervous system from any interference. As the system starts working more freely, without interference, the brain and body are able to better communicate.

Kids will be kids… With this comes plenty of bumps and bruises. Along with the physical stress that kids place on their bodies, they also have to fight against chemical and emotional stress. Toxic foods and relationships also cause our bodies to go into protective mode. The body is so intelligent!

The chiropractic adjustment helps the body release the stress from the system and allows for less interference. So what happens when there is less interference in a child’s nervous system?

Parents report an array of things to us! From sleeping better at night to improved immune systems, these kids are healthier! Their bodies are able to better process their external environment leading to improved focus in school, better listening ears, and improved behavior! We hear about improvements with things like bed wetting and digestive problems. We also see a decrease in ear infections!

Chiropractic care truly is a family affair here at Cook Chiropractic! We love seeing the entire crew and growing a healthy community!
